Terms of service
These terms govern your use of the murmr apps for Mac and iPhone and the murmrvoice.com website (together, the “Service”). They are written to be read. Effective June 9, 2026.
1. Who we are
The Service is operated by murmr (“murmr,” “we,” “us”), a solo-founder U.S. software company. By installing the apps, creating an account, or using the website, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
2. What the Service is
murmr provides on-device dictation (speech-to-text) and playback (text-to-speech) software. Transcription and cleanup run locally on your hardware; the only hosted components are the optional settings-sync backend and this website. The privacy policy describes exactly what data is and isn't handled server-side, and is part of these terms.
3. License
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the murmr apps on Apple devices you own or control, for your own use, subject to these terms. You may not reverse engineer the apps except where the law permits it notwithstanding this clause, resell or redistribute them, or use them to build a competing hosted service from our binaries.
murmr ships with open-source components, including the NVIDIA Parakeet speech model (CC-BY-4.0). Those components remain under their own licenses, which are attributed in the app's About window.
4. Accounts
An account is optional and only needed for cross-device settings sync. You are responsible for your credentials and for activity under your account. You must provide an email address you control. You can stop using the Service and request deletion of server-side data at any time (see the privacy policy).
5. Free tier, trial & subscriptions
The core of murmr is free. New installs include a 14-day trial of murmr Pro; when it ends, the app degrades gracefully to the free tier — your local data is never held hostage. Pro will be offered as a paid subscription; launch pricing will be announced before any charge exists and published on the pricing page. When subscriptions launch, billing terms (renewal, cancellation, refunds) will be stated at the point of purchase and added here.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service to violate any law, including laws governing the recording of other people (you are responsible for obtaining any required consent before recording or transcribing anyone);
- probe, overload, or abuse the hosted components (sync backend, this website);
- misrepresent murmr's output as a certified or verbatim record where one is legally required.
7. Your content
Everything you dictate, transcribe, or synthesize is yours. We claim no rights over it. Because transcription runs on your device, in most cases we never possess your content at all; where you opt into settings sync, we host that payload solely to provide the sync feature.
8. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. On-device speech recognition is imperfect: transcripts may contain errors, and you are responsible for reviewing output before relying on it.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, murmr will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or revenue, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of $50 or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
10. Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to the hosted components for breach of these terms. Sections 7–9 survive termination. Termination of hosted access never deletes data stored locally on your devices.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which the operating company is organized, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. The operating entity's legal name and venue will be finalized on this page before paid subscriptions launch.
12. Changes
We may update these terms as the Service evolves. The current version always lives at murmrvoice.com/terms with its effective date; material changes will be noted in the changelog. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.
